How to connect to the internet while roaming overseas

Issues with Data Roaming

Having trouble accessing the Internet while roaming? Don't worry, we've got a checklist below that might help solve the issue!

  • Do you have Data Roaming activated your handset? 
  • Do you have an active Roaming Add-on selected? 
  • Is there any mobile or data coverage at your location?
  • Does your handset have the right APN (Access Point Names) settings?
  • Do you have your 3G / WCDMA enabled? 

Do you have Mobile Data and  Data Roaming activated on your phone?

In order to use Mobile Data while roaming, you should first check that your Data Roaming switch is turned on. (Refer to the steps below)

Android devices

Step 1:

From Settings, select Mobile Network.

Step 2:

Activate Mobile Data and Data Roaming

iOS devices

Step 1:

On Settings, Select Mobile and activate Mobile Data.

Step 2:

Select Mobile Data Options and activate Data Roaming

Does your handset have the right APN (Access Point Names) settings?

To ensure that your handset can use data roaming, choose your device's operating system below and try the following steps:

Android Version 6.0 and below 

Step 1:

From your main home screen, select Applications

Step 2:

Find and select Settings

Step 3:

Select Mobile Networks

Step 4:

 Select Access Point Names

Step 5:

Select New APN and enter the following details:

Name: Skinny Data

APN: wapaccess.co.nz

Step 6:

Almost done! Select the top right button and proceed.

Step 7:

Select Save to ensure that details are saved

Step 8:

Once the new APN Settings are saved, you will need to restart your handset to ensure the settings are activated.

Step 9:

Once your handset is restarted, you can now try browsing the Internet! 

Android Version 7.0 and above

Step 1:

From your main home screen, select Applications/Apps

Step 2:

Find and select Settings

Step 3:

Select Connections

Step 4:

Select Mobile Networks

Step 5:

Select Access Point Names

Step 6:

Select Add

Step 7:

Enter the following details

Name: Skinny Data

APN: wapaccess.co.nz

Step 8:

Select SAVE

Step 9:

Once the new APN Settings are saved, you will need to restart your handset to ensure the settings are activated 

Step 10:

Once your handset is restarted, you can now try browsing the Internet!

iOS 10.0.1 and above

Step 1:

From your main home screen, select Settings.

Step 2:

Select Mobile

Step 3:

Activate Mobile Data

Step 4:

Select Mobile Data Options and activate Data Roaming

Step 5:

Select Mobile Data Network

Step 6:

Ensure APN is set to wapaccess.co.nz

Step 7:

Once the new APN Settings are saved, you will need to restart your handset to ensure the settings are activated.

Step 8:

Once your handset is restarted, you can now try browsing the Internet!
