Factors That Impact Speed
Individual customers will experience different speeds at different times – sometimes higher and sometimes lower. Factors such as the performance of your modem, location of the server you’re connected to, the performance of your device and your in-home Wi-Fi setup can impact the speeds experienced.
If your plan uses a wireless connection, then factors such as the distance you are from a cell tower, the network capability and the overall use of that cell tower by other consumers can impact the speed experienced.
Plan Speeds
Reported average speeds for the below plans included in the New Zealand Commerce Commission's Measuring Broadband (MBNZ) report.
For Video streaming, wireless technology works well if you are streaming HD videos and don’t have several other devices also using your broadband. If you are wanting to stream video content in 4K Ultra HD, then our fibre plans are better suited. Also, some streaming content services, such as live sports services and live TV may require greater broadband performance than others. Check with the service to understand their requirements.
For gaming, wireless technology will work well for games that don’t require fast reactions, like card games or Angry Birds (we refer to this as “basic gaming”). For fast-paced games, such as sports games or first-person shooter games, our fibre plans will be better suited.
Video conferencing on wireless technology works best when there are a smaller number of participants and you aren’t ‘multitasking’ on your computer or other devices at the same time. If you are likely to have several participants or there will be other devices in your home using your connection at the same time, we recommend our fibre plans to help reduce lag and buffering.

Your actual speeds will be affected by various factors including NZ and overseas networks, your modem and computer technology including Wi-Fi capability, internal home wiring and other environmental factors. Wireless performance additionally depends on the wireless signal strength at your premise along with the capability and capacity of the cell tower.
All you need is a debit or credit card, and it will be charged every 30 days, so you don't have to worry about organising payments.

Fair use policy applies to our $55 plan.
This means you cannot use the service in a way that is overly excessive or unreasonable. We’ve based it on how most people use the service. We love to reward our existing customers, so if you’ve got a 4 weekly $16 or above Skinny mobile plan, you can get $10 off per month when you join our $45, $50 or $55 broadband plans.
If you’re eligible, just sign up to one of these broadband plans and follow the prompts so we know you’ve got the right mobile plan and we’ll apply the discount every month to your broadband renewal charge. You need to make sure your mobile plan is active at the time of your broadband plan renewing as that is when we will apply the $10 discount. 1 discount per account.
When you receive your modem and activate it online, make sure you use the email address you used when signing up to the broadband plan, when you’re asked to log in.
Just sign up for one of our broadband plans and we’ll give you 1 or 3 months free depending on the plan!
The offer will be applied to your Skinny account as a credit for 100% of your base plan charges for the duration of the promo.
The offer does not include any additional services which will be charged at full price, depending on which promo you are on. After your promo expires, you'll pay for your plan as per usual.
This is a limited-time offer for new Skinny broadband customers only. Available to customers who do not currently get broadband from Skinny and have not had broadband with Skinny for the last 90 days.
You don't need to have a fixed term contract if you don't want one. It's all about how much you want to pay upfront. We've got fixed term contract plans as a way to offer an option to include the modem and connection fee in the contract cost. Once you are connected to this plan, you're with us for 12 months.
If you leave before your contract is up, you'll be charged an early termination fee. If you’ve joined on a $35, $40, $45, $50 or $55 plan then that fee is $249 if you leave in the first 6 months or $124 if you leave in the second 6 months. If you’ve joined on a $73 or above plan then that fee is $199 if you leave in the first 6 months and $99 of you leave in the second 6 months. If a 12 month fixed contract plan isn’t your jam we've got a great No Pesky Term option as well. With this one you just need to pay for the upfront costs like the modem and a connection fee, if applicable, and then you've got enough broadband to last until the cows come home.
It's super easy to keep track of your usage for your Skinny Wireless 4G Broadband plan. You can check how much data you have left by logging into your account at skinny.co.nz. It's updated in real time so you know exactly what you've used and what you've got left on your 30 day plan. You can also repurchase your plan at anytime to get another 60GB, or 120GB, and buy a Data Add-On of 10GB for $20.
If you aren’t happy with your connection on a wireless broadband plan for any reason, return your modem to us within the first 30 days and if you’re on an open term plan we’ll refund the cost of the modem, or if you’re on a term contract we’ll let you leave your contract early without the normal termination fee. Plan charges will still apply. This guarantee doesn't affect any rights or remedies you may have under the Consumer Guarantees Act. To get in touch with us about this guarantee contact our Care centre.
Due to the fact that our Wireless Broadband runs on 4G, this can put a lot of pressure on our cell towers with their heavier data requirements than that of mobile devices and your local cell site may already be at capacity in your area. You see, our mobile customers and broadband customers will share the same cell site, so to ensure both our mobile and our broadband customers get the best service possible we need to make sure we are not overloading the towers available. If your address is delivering a message that says you can't get Skinny Broadband, we're super sorry that you can't get it right now but as our techies keep updating the network, you may be able to get it in the future, so keep checking back.
Yep, you’ll need a Skinny modem. This is included if you choose a 12-month term option, or if you choose a No Pesky Term you will need to pay for it upfront. You are not able to bring your own 3rd-party modem to connect with Skinny Unlimited.
If you’re on a wireless broadband plan you can take your modem to your new place. Just check your new property in the Skinny Address Checker to check what plans are available and let us know you will be using your Skinny Wireless modem at a new address. If you try to use your Skinny Wireless modem at a new address without telling us we may disconnect it from our network.
If you’re on a fixed broadband plan you can also take your modem to your new place as long as the house has a connection to the same technology.
Modem shipping and handling fee applies.
Recycle it!
Head over to ANY Spark retail store and hand the modem over to a staff member, or place it in the tech recycling bin in-store.
Spark have over 60 stores around the country so there will be one near you.
Skinny has an excellent phone and modem recycling program via Spark and by recycling we all help the planet.
We want to make sure everyone gets to enjoy our awesome Skinny wireless broadband so we need to make sure that everyone plays fair. Our Fair Use Policy for our wireless $55 plan means you cannot use the service in a way that is overly excessive or unreasonable. We’ve based it on how most people use the service. If you’re consistently smoking the internet, we will get in touch with you to let you know about some options, and if the excessive usage continues we may need to move you to another plan to protect everyone else’s experience.
In full it means ’Megabits per second’. Bits are tiny units of data, and a ‘megabit’ is 1 million of these bits. But you don’t really need to know that. All you need to know is that ‘Megabits per second’ is the measure of how fast your download speed is. Different types of internet usage may require different download speeds. A good number to keep in mind is that you will require about 5Mbps to stream Netflix in High Definition.
We’ve decided to focus only on the best broadband tech, so you get great-value speeds with no frilly bits.
We've won a raft of awards for our service. Like the Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers Award 2018 in the Broadband category, and the Consumer NZ People's Choice Award 2016-2018. Plus we're the only telco that is Consumer Trusted. We mean business.
